Monica A. Janas

1998 Distinguished Teaching Award


After a year as Visiting Assistant Professor 1991-92, Dr. Janas was appointed Visiting Professor at the College of Charleston in 1992. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 1998 and to Professor, posthumously, in 2004.

Dr. Janas taught “Foundations of Education” and “Human Growth and the Educational Process” to both undergraduate and graduate students. She was known for her student-centered approach to both teaching and advising. She supervised student teachers in special education and secondary education.

An alumna of the College of Charleston, class of 1970, Dr. Janas received her Bachelor of Science degree in biology. She earned her M.A.T. from The Citadel, her M.S.Ed. from Old Dominion University, and her Ph.D. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Dr. Janas began her career teaching gifted and educable mentally handicapped students in elementary and middle schools. She taught education at Tidewater Community College and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, served as a consultant at St. Francis Xavier Hospital and the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and held the position of Teacher Evaluator for the Charleston County School District.
