David M. Kowal
Art History

1986 Distinguished Research Award


Dr. Kowal has taught Art History in the School of the Arts at the College of Charleston since 1979 when he joined the faculty as Assistant Professor. Promoted to Associate Professor in 1985 and Professor in 1994, he has also served as Coordinator of Art History, 1985-86 and 1989-91, and Director of the Halsey Gallery of Art, 1989-91.

During the 2005-06 academic year, Dr. Kowal’s classes include History of Art, Special Topics: Themes in the History of Art, Latin American Art, Pre-Columbian Art and Culture, and the Senior Paper in Art History.

Dr. Kowal has authored many publications and presentations in his areas of special interest: Indo-Portuguese, Portuguese and Spanish art and architecture.

Dr. Kowal received his B.A. degree in Fine Arts and Political Science from Brandeis University. His M.A. and Ph.D. in History of Art are from the University of Michigan.

Before joining the faculty at the College of Charleston, Dr. Kowal was a lecturer at Emmanuel College and the University of Michigan.
