Carl James Likes
Chemistry

1978 Distinguished Teaching Award


Dr. Likes was appointed Professor of Chemistry at the College of Charleston in 1958. He served as department chairman, was elevated to the rank of Distinguished Professor, and gained emeritus status when he retired in 1982. He is credited for leadership in maintaining high academic standards for students of chemistry and ensuring that the department maintained its reputation for excellence.

A native of Charleston, Dr. Likes received his B.S. degree in Chemistry from the College of Charleston in 1937. He was awarded a DuPont Fellowship to attend graduate school at the University of Virginia and received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry in 1941. Before his appointment at the College of Charleston, he was Instructor of Chemistry at the University of Virginia, Assistant Professor at Tulane University, Professor and Department Chairman at Hampden-Sydney College and Research Supervisor at the Virginia Institute for Scientific Research. Beginning in 1947, he served numerous summers on the faculty of the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Dr. Likes was a member of the South Carolina Historical Society and of the Preservation Society. He was a life member of the University of Virginia Alumni Association and of the College of Charleston Alumni Association, which honored him with its Distinguished Service Award in 1986. In addition to the Distinguished Teaching Award, honors from the College included the Founder’s Medal and an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters.

Dr. Likes died January 29, 2002.
