Peter McCandless has been an instructor of History since coming to the College of Charleston in 1974. He currently teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses in History.
Dr. McCandless received his Ph.D. in Modern British History from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1974. He is the author of Moonlight, Magnolias, and Madness: Insanity in South Carolina from the Colonial Period to the Progressive Era (1996). He has also published a number of articles on the history of mental illness and related subjects in Britain and the United States. His current research is on disease and medicine in the early Carolina.
