Dr. Reynolds was an adjunct instructor at the College of Charleston before his full-time appointment as Professor of History in 1988. During his career at the college, he served as Chair of the Department of History and was named Distinguished Professor in 1999. Upon his retirement in 2002, Dr. Reynolds was awarded the title of Distinguished Professor Emeritus.
Dr. Reynolds is the respected author of a number of books about maritime history and conducted extensive research on the use of astronomy by the ancient Minoan civilization on the island of Crete. He served as consultant to the National Park Service, the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, and the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College. He was also appointed to the Advisory Committee on History for the United States Secretary of the Navy.
Dr. Reynolds earned his B.A. degree at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at Duke University.
Before he joined the faculty at the College of Charleston, Dr. Reynolds taught at the U.S. Naval Academy, the University of Maine and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
