Herb Silverman

1978 Distinguished Research Award

Dr. Silverman began teaching at the College of Charleston in 1976 as Associate Professor of Mathematics. He was promoted to Professor in 1979. While looking forward to retirement, Dr. Silverman teaches undergraduate classes in Contemporary Mathematics with Applications and Introduction to Abstract Mathematics. He also teaches a graduate course in Real Analysis. His research emphasis is in Geometric Function Theory.
Dr. Silverman served the College as Speaker of the Faculty 1980-82. He also founded the local chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the national honorary mathematics society.
Dr. Silverman received his A.B. degree from Temple University and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Syracuse University.
During his tenure at the College of Charleston, Dr. Silverman has been Visiting Scholar at the University of Michigan, Visiting Professor at the University of Papua New Guinea and Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Davis. Before coming to Charleston, he taught at Clark University and the University of Delaware.
