What Does the Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Do?

The Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs is the chief academic officer of the College of Charleston and a key member of the President’s senior staff. The Provost oversees academic programs, faculty affairs and many academic support functions, and works to ensure that the College of Charleston fulfills its institutional mission and goals.

The responsibility of the Office of the Provost is to provide academic vision and leadership. The responsibilities are as broad and diverse as the College of Charleston itself. With the deans, department chairs, program heads, faculty, and administrative offices, Provost Elise Jorgens and her staff work with other areas of campus and the President’s office to advance the quality and mission of the College, including implementing the Strategic Plan.

On a daily basis, the Provost’s Office oversees such vital issues as faculty and staff personnel concerns including recruitment, hiring, promotion and tenure; budget requests and needs; academic programming initiatives; and faculty concerns. The Provost works closely with the deans of the six schools, the Dean of the Graduate School, the Dean of Libraries, the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, and the directors of the units that comprise Enrollment Management. Others who report to the Provost include the Director of International Programs, the Dean of the Honors College, the Director of Undergraduate Research, and the Director of the Office of Research and Grants Administration. The Provost also collaborates with the Faculty Senate.

In summary, the Provost’s Office provides leadership for and supports the efforts of the faculty and staff who work to ensure that the mission of academic excellence is achieved.
