U.S. History

Course Description:

This course is designed using the most recent curricular requirement published in the AP United States History Description. During this graduate level course, emphasis will be placed on critical and evaluative thinking skills, syllabus writing, interpretation of original documents, and historiography. This course correlates to the College of Charleston conceptual framework and theme of making the teaching and learning connection since participants will expand their knowledge of teaching U.S. history to work effectively with others to produce products and solve problems. Solid reading and writing skills, along with a willingness to devote considerable time to homework and study, are necessary to succeed.

Course Objectives:

  1. Create AP U.S. History course syllabi
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of historical chronology
  3. Use historical data to support an argument or position
  4. Differentiate between historiographical schools of thought
  5. Interpret data from original documents, including letters, graphs, etc.
  6. Effectively use analytical skills of evaluation, cause and effect
  7. Discuss the format of the AP U.S. History Exam
