"Coinherence: A Model of the Soul's Relationship with God"
Charles Williams, the twentieth-century English poet and novelist, founded a Christian esoteric fellowship called "the Company of the Coinherence," dedicated to contemplative prayer and practice around a particular doctrine of the Trinity. This talk will explore Williams's idea of coinherence, also known as indwelling or perichoresis, and some of its medieval roots. Its expressions include mystical pregnancy, telepathy, and the exchange of hearts with Jesus, and it is characterized by intimate links between erotic and spiritual love. Gertrude of Helfta, Julian of Norwich, and Catherine of Siena were among the medieval mystics central to its theory and practice.
