Ethyl R. Brown (1902-1997) Papers (ca. 1945-1991)

Biographical Note : Ethyl R. Brown, daughter of John and Lula Richards and wife of B.W. Brown, was born in 1902 in Charleston, SC. She attended Avery Institute, Charleston, and graduated from Poro College of Beauty and Culture of Chicago; she operated a beauty shop in New York for several years and founded the Palmetto (Poro) Beauty Culture School in Charleston. She also taught cosmetology at Burke High School, belonged to women’s organizations and Morris Brown AME Church, and was a state president and life-long member of the National Beauty Culturalists’ League. She died in 1997 and is buried in the Morris Brown AME Cemetery.

Scope and Content : Approx. 30 items (ca. 1945-1991)

Description: Certificates, awards, photographs of Brown, her family, and activities, and other documents related to Brown’s professional and social activities. Certificates include teaching certification by SC State Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners (1945). There are also several photographs by Walter Boags (1917-1997), well-known African- American photographer from Charleston, SC.
