Charleston Habitat for Humanity - Know the Facts
Charleston Habitat for Humanity (CHFH) is a non-profit, Christian housing ministry is committed to providing affordable homeownership opportunities for working families in the cities Charleston and North Charleston. CHFH was founded in 1989 by local citizens that were concerned with the large quantity of people living in substandard housing. Since its founding, Charleston Habitat for Humanity has built 63 homes, housing 300 people. The cost of a Habitat home is relative to location, land, labor and available building material. Currently, a Charleston Habitat home costs an average of $65,000.

OUR MISSION

Charleston Habitat for Humanity provides affordable homeownership opportunities for working families of low to moderate income in the cities of Charleston and North Charleston. Families can qualify for either new homes or home repair programs. Financial and in-kind support comes from homeowner principal mortgage payments; contributions from individuals, businesses, grants and foundations; sales from the Charleston Habitat for Humanity ReStore; and volunteer labor on our construction site.

HOW DOES THE PARTNERSHIP WORK?

Working in partnership with families, Charleston Habitat helps break the cycle of poverty and substandard housing in the cities of Charleston and North Charleston. Habitat is not a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment, our homeowners pay an interest-free monthly mortgage. The money generated from these mortgages goes into a revolving fund “Fund for Humanity” which supports the construction of more homes. Habitat families invest 500 hours of sweat equity into the construction of their own Habitat homes and the Habitat homes of other families. Habitat homeowners pay taxes and escrow items just like everyone else. Homeowners are also required to attend monthly workshops ranging in topics from home maintenance to budget management.

HOW ARE PARTNER FAMILIES SELECTED?

First, interested families fill out a housing application. Next, members of the family and selection committee review the housing application. Families are then chosen based on their level of need, willingness to become partners in the program and their ability to pay a monthly mortgage. Race, religion, ethnic origin, sex, martial sex, family status, age or disabilities are not factors in choosing the families to receive Habitat houses.
