Bill Hawkins, Executive Editor

The Post & Courier (Charleston, SC)

William E. N. Hawkins has worked at newspapers for more than 36 years as a reporter and editor, before taking over as executive editor of The Post & Courier  in March 2005.  Most recently, Hawkins worked at The Herald-Sun in Durham, where he served as executive editor for 17 years. For the last decade, he also served as vice president of the Durham Herald Co.  While in Durham, Hawkins led a newsroom that regularly won state and national journalism awards. He also created new editions, including a monthly Spanish-language publication.

Hawkins graduated high school in Leetsdale, Pa., where he edited the school newspaper. He earned his college degree from Cornell University and then went into the Army, serving as an intelligence officer in Vietnam.  He has worked in newspapers since 1968. Before moving to Durham, he worked as a reporter at the Baltimore Evening Sun and The Patriot-News in Harrisburg, Pa.   In Baltimore, Hawkins became an editor, rising through the ranks of the newsroom from assistant city editor to assistant managing editor. He helped develop a staff that won two Pulitzer prizes.
