Bio Bill Hughes CA As newly appointed Senior VP of Corporate Communications for CA (one of the world's largest IT management software providers), Bill Hughes has more than 20 years experience in high-technology and corporate public relations and marketing, including IMS Health and eight years with the IBM Corporation of Armonk, NY. In 1999, he was named to the Senior Leadership Team, consisting of the top 270 IBM executives worldwide. Bill served as VP of Media Relations for the IBM Corporation from March 2002 until January 2004, where he directed media and press relations, including financial and corporate communications. During this period, he helped secure considerable positive media coverage of the company and established excellent relationships with many of the country's leading business journalists, including Bill Bulkeley, Wall Street Journal; David Kirkpatrick, Fortune; Kevin Maney, USA Today; Spencer Ante, Business Week; and Steve Lohr, NY Times, among others. Also during this period, Bill managed media relations and helped devise corporate media strategy through a number of highly visible events. These included a CEO transition, several major acquisitions, the launch of a new corporate positioning called ebusiness on demand, the first accounting charge and layoffs in nine years, offshoring, an SEC investigation, an employee lawsuit involving changes to the IBM pension plan, new US Treasury Regulations regarding cash balance pension plans, and a lawsuit with SCO Corporation. Prior to joining IBM corporate communications, Bill directed all communications programs, including media and press relations, industry analyst relations, executive, sales force and employee communications for IBM's Global Sales and Distribution, the sales force for IBM. Bill also held several senior level positions in communications, including VP of Communications for IBM Asia Pacific. Based in Tokyo, Bill managed the communications for IBM Asia Pacific and the communications programs in the five regions, which include IBM Japan, IMB Greater China, IBM Korea, IBM Australia/New Zealand, and IBM ASEAN/SA. He joined IBM in June 1996 as director of PR of IBM's Personal Systems Groups. Prior to joining IBM, Bill held several senior level positions with two public relations firms in Boston, London, and Los Angeles. He was Senior VP and Managing Director of the Los Angeles office of Burson-Marsteller, where he directed marketing communications and public relations activities for Bandai America, Imperial Bank, Hollywood park Casino, J.P. Morgan Chase and Sun Microsystems. In June 1995, he directed Sun Microsystems' launch of JAVA, one of the company's most successful product launches and initiatives. Before joining Burson-Marsteller, Bill was a senior VP and general manger for Miller/Shandwick, one of the largest technology public relations firms in the world. In 1991, he was named the Managing Director of the London office for Miller/Shandwick Communications, Ltd. Bill has worked with some of the world's most successful technology companies, including Accenture, British Telecom, Compaq Computer Corp. (Hewlett-Packard), Intel, Motorola, Seimens-Nixdorf, and Seagate. He has developed and directed a number of crisis communications programs for corporate and technology companies and has managed and implemented investor relations and shareholder programs for several Fortune 500 companies.
