Department of Communication students and faculty were honored at this year's Multicultural ExCEL Awards Program, held March 27, 2008, at the College of Charleston’s Physicians Memorial Auditorium. Communication major Matthew McClellan won the Septima P. Clark Award. This award is presented to a graduating minority student, with the highest grade point average, who has completed at least 60 credit hours of course work at the College of Charleston. Communication major Karen Abernathy received the Lucille S. Whipper Award. This award is given annually for demonstrated, exemplary leadership qualities, based upon scholarship, participation in service learning opportunities, outreach and other relevant activities both on and off campus. Robert Westerfelhaus, an associate professor in the Department of Communication, won the Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the largest of the six schools that make up the College of Charleston. Lynn Cherry, associate professor of communication and director of undergraduate academic services for the College of Charleston, was nominated for the Unsung Champion Award. This award recognizes an individual for the hard work he or she does behind the scenes. The ExCEL Awards recognize the multicultural achievements of students, faculty, staff, and other College of Charleston community members. A new record for the number of ExCEL nominations was set during 2008. |
