Alumnus named Journalist of the Year

Ron Menchaca, reporter for the Charleston Post and Courier and a graduate of the Department of Communication, has won the South Carolina Press Association’s Journalist of the Year Award.

“We are thrilled for Ron Menchaca,” said Brian McGee, chair of the Department of Communication. “Ron is a consummate professional and a credit to his employer and his alma mater.”

Menchaca regularly lectures and gives feedback to students in communication courses at the College of Charleston.

Menchaca also was part of a team that won the South Carolina Press Association’s Reporting in Depth award for coverage of the June Sofa Super Store fire in Charleston.

That same team recently won first-place National Headliner Award honors for investigative journalism in covering the fire. The National Headliner Awards are sponsored by the Press Club of Atlantic City.
