GRE preparation

Students interested in the new master’s degree program in communication beginning Fall 2006 can receive preparation assistance from the College of Charleston at the Center for Student Learning. CSL Director Steve Gibson can be contacted to arrange time for prospective MA students to prepare for the exam. His email is gibsons@cofc.edu and his telephone is 953-5635. Students need not be formerly or presently enrolled at the College. You can also go to any bookstore and purchase prep books. Some examples include GRE for Dummies and Kaplan GRE.

The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) general test is an assessment tool used to evaluate analytical writing, verbal and quantitative skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study.

You will have 3 1/4 hours to take the GRE test. The three sections are broken down like this:

Analytical Writing: Issue Task = 45 minutes and Argument Task = 30 minutes
Verbal: 30 questions = 30 minutes
Quantitative: 28 questions = 45 minutes

To register for the test, you can go to the GRE website at http://www.gre.org and find testing centers listed under your state and city. It can be taken once a month up to 5 times a year. You will need to ensure that the scores are sent to the Graduate School for the College of Charleston.
