Kirk Stone Named Professor of the Year

In April, Dr. Kirk Stone, an Associate Professor of Communication, was named the first recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Award. The award (given by leaders of Lambda Pi Eta, the Public Relations Student Society of America, and Communication Club) was presented at the annual Senior Banquet, where dozens of Communication majors and several alumni are also honored for outstanding achievements.

“Winning this award is one of the most memorable highlights of my teaching career,” said Dr. Stone. “That’s because nothing means more to me, and to most teachers at the College, than to be appreciated by their students. The award was like a surprise birthday party with the perfect gift, but even better because it made me feel 10 years younger rather than one year older

” Dr. Stone came to the College in 1992, after receiving his Ph.D. at American University (School of International Service). Prior to that, he received both his bachelor's and master's degrees (in Political Science) at the University of Kentucky. His research interests include news media coverage of foreign affairs at the local level. Other accomplishments include being awarded a fellowship to the American Society of Newspaper Editors in their Institute for Journalism Excellence Program; he was assigned to the Calgary Herald (Canada).

He is best known for his energy and expertise in teaching the Media Law course, a famed rite of passage for departmental seniors. He also regularly teaches courses in Writing for the Mass Media, Mass Media, and Sports Writing. His teaching style is direct and firm, but also injected with wit and whimsy. Few professors possess Dr. Stone’s extensive knowledge of major media case laws, and he demands that students reach their full learning potential in all of his courses.

“Our faculty is the main reason why we have an outstanding reputation,” said Dr. Douglas Ferguson, chair of the Department of Communication. “Kirk Stone is one of our best teachers. His preparation and thoroughness in grading are legendary. His award recognition, coming from the students themselves, is indicative of his qualities, and the talent of all of our faculty.”
