Students who apply for federal assistance may be selected for a process called verification. The verification process requires that you submit documentation to verify the data submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Please understand the verification process is triggered by the Department of Education when the FAFSA is processed. Rarely, does CofC select students to be verified.
The documents needed to complete this process are:
- A signed copy of the parent(s) and the student's (spouse's) federal tax return(s) including copies of all W2's and any schedules submitted with these federal tax returns. Electronic Signature forms, such as 8879 or 8453, do not qualify as tax returns.
- The verification worksheet (for dependent students or independent students).
- Any additional documentation to verify untaxed income and/or benefits received, such as 1099-SSA or Leave and Earnings Statement.
The Financial Aid Office will notify you by email and CougarTrail if you have been selected for verification. Note we adhere to the strictest confidentiality.
If you need an exact copy of a previously filed and processed return and all attachments (including Forms W-2), you must complete Form 4506 (PDF), Request for Copy of Tax Return and mail it to the IRS address in the instructions along with $39 for each tax year requested. Copies are generally available for returns filed in the current and past 6 years.
