For financial aid purposes, a student is considered dependent unless one of the following applies:
- The student is 24 (was born before January 1, 1985, for the 2008-2009 aid year).
- The student is working on a master's or doctorate program at the beginning of the academic year.
- The student is married as of the date the FAFSA is filed.
- The student has children who receive more than half of their support from the student.
- The student has dependents (other than children or spouse) who live with the student and receive more than half of their support from the student and will continue receiving support through June 30, 2009.
- Both of the student's parents are deceased or the student is, or was (until age 18), a ward of the court.
- The student is a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces.
- The student is currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training.
If one of the preceding does not apply to the student, the student is automatically a dependent student and required to include in the FAFSA information from the parent (and step-parent, if remarried) with whom the student lived more in the past 12 months. In extreme circumstances (i.e. abuse, neglect) the Office of Financial Aid may override the dependency status to independent. Contact the office in person if such extreme circumstances apply.
