Safety in Lab
Safety is of prime concern. We are all to wear lab goggles, lab
aprons, and gloves at all times in the laboratory. Approved goggles
and boxes of gloves are available in the bookstore. Aprons will
be provided. Goggles and aprons must be worn at all times. Gloves
must be worn when dealing with corrosive material and when required
by the instructor.
Closed-toe shoes, pants or skirts below the knee, and shirts with
sleeves must be worn in lab for safety. Students must leave the
lab until they are properly dressed.
Know what you plan to do each day before you come to lab. Keep
yourself alert and aware as you carry out your experiments.
If an accident occurs, ask the instructor or lab assistant immediately
to help take care of the problem. Also familiarize yourself with
the location and use of all safety devices.
Format
This course will use Chemistry Laboratory by Faber, Martin, Potts,
Rogers, and Tate. The course is designed as a problem-solving approach
to chemistry laboratory. The format is to:
- Present a set of skills and techniques that can be employed
to solve a chemical problem
- Provide reagents, equipment and known compounds that can be
employed to develop particular skills and techniques
- Encourage the student to evaluate his/her mastery of these skills
and techniques by use of available references to the known compounds
such as the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics and the Chem
Lab Web site at http://www.cofc.edu/genchemlab/
- Present a problem to be solved by the student by the application
of the skills and techniques developed.
You will need a lab notebook from the bookstore. It consists of
graph paper pages with yellow sheets for a carbon copy. One of the
copies will be turned into the laboratory instructor each week at
a place and time designated by the instructor.
All lab work must be done during the regularly scheduled lab hours.
Therefore, to complete the work presented, you will need to plan
the use of your 3 hours in lab each week. The lab manual, question
sessions at the beginning of each lab, your lecture text and library
resources are available to help you plan your work.
A series of self-tests and answers is available in the back of
your lab manual for you to check your understanding of the concepts
in each project. A test will be given on each project in the last
week of that project. A comprehensive exam will be given during
the examinations period.
Grade determination will be based upon: 50% for method and results
of projects; 30% for tests; and 20% for examination.
Chemistry 112 and 112 lab are separate courses but are co-requisites
which means they must be taken together unless you have previously
earned credit in one of them. If one is dropped, the other must
be dropped also.
Each student must do each experiment individually except when explicitly
directed otherwise by the instructor. Reports from other students
must not be used in preparing your own report. Falsification of
data is a violation of the Honor Code and will be reported to the
Dean's office. If you have any questions regarding the Honor Code
consult your instructor.
