Fall 2008 Billing and Due Dates
The Fall 2008 eBills are scheduled to be delivered on July 3, 2008 with a due date of August 16, 2008. As August 16 falls on a Saturday, the last day we can receive mailed or in person payments is on Friday, August 15. Cougar Trail and eBill will be available on Saturday, August 16 for payments.
Tuition: The tuition and fees schedule for the upcoming 2008/2009 year can be found at http://www.treasurer.cofc.edu/financial.html.
eBills: All pre-registered students will receive their eBills through their Edisto email addresses as well as to the email addresses of anyone who has been signed up as an Authorized User by the student. For information about becoming an Authorized User, please see http://www.treasurer.cofc.edu/eBillInstructions.html.
Payment Plans: Starting with the Fall 2008 semester, we are pleased to offer a new option to our payment plans. There is now a choice between the original four-payment per semester plan and a new five payment per semester plan. The five payment plan will have due dates for the Fall on July 16, August 16, September 16, October 16 and November 16. The four payment plan due dates will be the same except for the July payment. Please see http://www.treasurer.cofc.edu/PaymentPlan.html for more information. **IF YOU HAVE FINANCIAL AID AND YOU WOULD LIKE TO SET UP A PAYMENT PLAN FOR THE BALANCE, LOOK FOR SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS ON THE EBILL COVER LETTER IN JULY.**
Past Due Balances: There is an important change in regulations regarding financial aid. Colleges are no longer able to pay overdue balances from previous semesters with financial aid for the current term. Balances from previous semesters must be paid before financial aid can be applied to your Fall 2008 bill. Failure to pay past due balances, even if you have adequate financial aid in the new semester, can lead to cancellation of your Fall registration.
Refunds: As of the Fall 2008 semester, all refunds, whether from financial aid overpayment or any other source, must be able to be directly deposited into any checking or savings account. Please set up your banking information on Cougar Trail under “Bank Account Information”. This will expedite any refunds to the account of your choosing.
Third Party Payers: If you have any third party paying for college expenses, such as the military, state 529 plans, etc., please be sure to notify us by fax or email as soon as possible. We will do our best to work with you to have these payments credited as quickly as possible to your account if eligible.
Cancellation of Schedule: Any balance not paid in full as of the due date is subject to schedule cancellation. Please contact us immediately if you believe the payment will be delayed for reasons out of your control. Cancellation of schedule can delay your anticipated graduation date.Please feel free to contact us anytime:

College of Charleston Board of Trustees Increase TuitionAlong with a few new graduate programs, students of The Graduate School of the College of Charleston will experience a tuition hike for the 2008/09 academic year. College of Charleston’s board of trustees approved the new tuition during their meeting on Monday, June 9.
South Carolina residents will experience an increase of 13%, bringing graduate student tuition and fees to $368 per credit hour. Tuition and fees for out-of-state students was approved for $893 per credit hour. Graduate School dean, Amy Thompson McCandless, encourages “students to work with our office, their program directors and the financial aid office to find additional resources necessary to fund their academic expenses and accommodation costs.” Financial aid options can be found online at http://www.cofc.edu/gradschool/current/index.php#FinAid.
The fees will go into effect July 1, and the new tuition will be collected beginning with the Fall semester. Since offering its first graduate courses offered in 1972, The Graduate School of the College of Charleston continues to provide programs that take advantage of the unique opportunities provided by the people, institutions and environment of the Lowcountry. The Graduate School offers 17 master’s degrees and eight graduate-level certificate programs.

The Certificate in Urban & Regional Planning serves local professionals working in urban and regional planning and related fields. It provides advanced graduate training to develop the competencies required to address challenges facing the Lowcountry concerning development, growth, and preservation of quality of life.
The Lowcountry Graduate Center made it possible for the College of Charleston to hire a faculty member to lead this initiative. Faculty will also be working with local planning leaders to determine additional needs for graduate training opportunities.

The Third Annual Destination Charleston Takes PlaceOn Monday, April 7, 2008, 17 students from Claflin University, Johnson C. Smith and South Carolina State University attended the third annual Destination Charleston, a graduate school visitation.
The Graduate School of the College of Charleston guided these students through the steps necessary for entrance in to the best graduate programs. Based on the award-winning literature, the daylong conference covered key topics including how to create a competitive application packet and how to finance your graduate education. Representatives from the college’s 17 master’s degree and 7 graduate-level certificate programs were present to provide insider’s information about their programs and to help answer any questions students had regarding their plans for graduate education. Before leaving, each student received one of the best study guides for the entrance exam of their choosing.
Previous Destination Charleston agendas have included discussions with current student leaders, vice presidents of the College of Charleston, and even Queen Quet, chieftess of the Gullah-Geechee Nation. The event, designed to provide crucial information about graduate education and a chance to get a closer look at the Graduate School of the College of Charleston, began as a two-day event in April 2005, and will continue to be
offered every spring.

Graduate School Dean Announced

Dr. Amy Thompson McCandless has been named the permanent dean of the Graduate School and associate provost for research after serving as interim dean for nearly two years.
Dr. McCandless has worked at the College of Charleston for 30 years -- first as an editor of South Atlantic Urban Studies, then as a faculty member teaching U.S. women's and British history, and then as associate provost before assuming her current role as dean of the Graduate School and associate provost for research. Her book, The Past in the Present: Women's Higher Education in the Twentieth-Century American South was published by the University of Alabama Press in 1999 and won the History of Education Society Book Prize in 2001. She has published numerous articles on Southern women and edited several volumes on South Carolina history.
Provost and Sr. Vice President for Academic Affairs Elise B. Jorgens says, "Dr. McCandless has provided excellent leadership as the Interim Graduate Dean, and I look forward to even greater growth and development in our Graduate School as she now assumes the permanent role. She brings to the job a rich perspective from her history as a long-standing member of the faculty and her years as associate provost."
Under Dr. McCandless' leadership, the visibility of the Graduate School was increased through initiatives such as Graduate Research Poster Sessions, Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) workshops, electronic submission of theses, grants for graduate student research and presentations, and internet and print publications highlighting the College's seventeen master's and seven certificate programs. She supported the creation of the Graduate Student Association in June 2007 and currently serves as its faculty adviser.
Building on these accomplishments, Dr. McCandless would like to see additional master's degrees and certificate programs that take advantage of the opportunities provided by the people, institutions, and environment of the South Carolina Low Country.
College of Charleston Takes Home Award for Admissions Publication
The College of Charleston’s Division of Marketing and Communications won the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) III Special Merit Award for their Graduate School admissions publication, The Graduate School of the College of Charleston.
This publication beat 65 other submissions from a wide range of large universities, colleges, secondary and primary private schools.
The judges said “Overall, The Graduate School of the College of Charleston publication is a great piece. The photograph of the door on the cover was well done and intriguing with good use of the concept of future possibilities beyond the door. The simplicity was refreshing – too often publications are too busy, trying to gain the attention of too many diverse audiences, while the door on this publication speaks very simply to all. The interior is very easy to read and navigate and the supplemental pieces are a great size and highlight many individual programs.”

Knauss Fellowship Award Recipients Named
Three students in our Master's in Marine Biology Program -- Amanda McCarty, Luis Leandro, and Courtney Arthur -- and a student in our Master's in Environmental Studies Program -- Jessica Berrio -- were awarded Knauss Fellowships for the coming academic year. "The Knauss fellowship, established in 1979, provides a unique educational experience to students who have an interest in ocean, coastal and Great Lakes resources and in the national policy decisions affecting those resources. The program matches highly qualified graduate students with 'hosts' in the legislative and executive branch of government located in the Washington, D.C. area, for a one year paid fellowship.
