HSS Mission Statement

Mission

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences prepares students to function as independent, engaged, life-long learners who are capable of facing the challenges and opportunities in today’s world and are prepared, throughout the course of their lives, to be responsible citizens who contribute to the common good of society.

Vision

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences will serve as the heart of the liberal arts education at the College of Charleston. Embodying the finest traditions of liberal education, the teacher-scholars who comprise the school faculty will assist students in achieving their full intellectual potential through the general education curriculum, a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary majors and minors, elective courses and through experiential learning opportunities. In meeting the curricular requirements set forth by the faculty, students will develop critical thinking skills, effective communication skills, and a mastery of disciplinary knowledge bases and methodologies. The ultimate product of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, its graduates, will be men and women who are defined by not only the skill sets they developed while here, but also by a broadness of spirit, an appreciation of diversity and a love of learning that will lie at the center of their lives.
