SC-INBRE Aims & Institutions
See Below for a complete list of Mentor, Mentored and Outreach Institutions
The SC-INBRE is a network of academic institutions across South Carolina, united in a collaborative effort to develop our state's biomedical research capacity.
Four Predominately Undergraduate Institutions (PUIs), selected in a competitive process, will develop research and educational programs for undergraduate students in the areas of biotechnology, biochemistry, cell and molecular biology and related disciplines. Two of these schools are our largest PUIs (College of Charleston and Winthrop University), and two are private (Claflin and Furman Universities) including one HBCU (Claflin University). All seven of these SC-INBRE Core Institutions have made strong matching commitments to the SC-INBRE program.
A primary goal of INBRE is to increase the NIH research capacity of the state by programmatic expansion and networking of research activities of faculty and students at academic institutions throughout the state.
These SC-INBRE goals will be achieved through faculty expansion at the three research universities in South Carolina:
- Clemson University
- the University of South Carolina
- and the Medical University of South Carolina
These Mentor Institutions will work closely with the four 4-year institutions in South Carolina that are at an earlier stage, but at the frontline in South Carolina, in developing their research activities:
- The College of Charleston
- Furman University
- Winthrop University
- and Claflin University
These four Mentored Institutions are geographically located within commuting distance of the Mentor Institutions, and using SC-INBRE investments both for recruitment of new faculty and enhancement of the research of current faculty through summer salaries, release time and purchase of essential instrumentation.
Another 24 4-year institutions in South Carolina with bachelors programs in chemistry and biology are participating in the SC-INBRE as Outreach Institutions. Both faculty and students at these Outreach Institutions will be recruited into research laboratories of Mentor and Mentored institutions in order to promote the development of a Web of research interactions throughout the state, to enhance research activity at all academic institutions in the state, and to develop a pipeline by which outstanding students can be stimulated by, and recruited into, graduate programs at Mentor and Mentored institutions.
The University of South Carolina (USC) in Columbia serves as the Lead institution for the SC-INBRE. USC, through the Administrative, Outreach, and Bioinformatics Cores has proposed to:
- coordinate the activities of the SC-INBRE through regular and efficient communications with all institutions throughout the state;
- provide access to resources for support of research activity at all institutions in SC;
- provide training in data management and the use of statistical methods for experimental design and data analysis;
- provide training and resources for preparation of competitive grant proposals; and
- develop competitive grants programs to involve faculty at Mentored and Outreach institutions. The SC-INBRE provides a unique opportunity to enhance productive interactions among academic institutions throughout the state and thereby to accelerate the growth of biomedical research activities in South Carolina.
