Passports and Student Visas

How do I get a passport?

Application forms are available at the CIE. However, the U.S. Post Office on East Bay Street has forms and will process your application.

What is a visa and do I need one?

A visa is a document, issued by the country you are visiting, that allows you to legally enter the country. It generally confirms your status as a student while visiting that country. Not all countries require a visa for U.S. citizens. Visa requirements are based on country of citizenship, length of stay, etc. Check http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/foreignentryreqs.html to see whether or not you will need a student visa for your study abroad program. The CIE can also assist you.

Academics

Who has to approve my study abroad program?

Application forms are available at the CIE. However, the U.S. Post Office on East Bay Street has forms and will process your application.

What is a visa and do I need one?

The CIE, department chairs, your advisor, (and your major department chair if you have over 87 earned hours) all need to approve your study abroad program.

Are there GPA requirements?

Some programs have their own specific GPA requirements, but generally the minimum is a 2.5 GPA.

How will my grades/credits transfer back to CofC?

If you are studying on a CofC faculty-led program, you don’t need to worry about the transfer process because you are taking CofC classes. If you study abroad on a bi-lateral exchange or with an independent program, only the credits will transfer back, not the grades. Before you leave to study abroad, you must fill out a “Coursework Elsewhere Form”. This form can be picked up in the CIE and must be signed by the department chairs for each course you intend to take while abroad. Once you have the appropriate signatures, return the form to the CIE. A completed and signed form will serve as a contract ensuring that as long as you make a “C” or better in the approved courses, the credits will transfer back to CofC.

Where should I have my transcript sent?

Please have your transcript sent directly to the CIE. Once we receive the transcript we will match it up with your “Coursework Elsewhere Form” and submit it to the Registrar’s Office so the credit will be applied to your academic record. Transcripts should be sent to: Office of International Education and Programs, 66 George Street, College of Charleston, Charleston, SC 29424, USA.

Funding Study Abroad

How much does it cost to study abroad?

It depends on which program you choose. CofC programs have specific program fees which generally include airfare, housing, and some meals. Your normal CofC tuition is charged in addition to the program fee. For non-CofC programs, the prices vary depending on the program. Check with the CIE for information regarding programs and costs.

Can I use my financial aid and scholarships to study abroad?

Some scholarships such as Life and Palmetto Fellows can be used for study abroad programs. Also, most federal and state loans and grants can be used on all study abroad programs. Check with the CIE and the Financial Aid Office at CofC.

Are there scholarships specifically for studying abroad?

Yes. The CIE offers a limited number of scholarships each year. You can pick up an application form in the office. If you are studying with an independent program, many of the providers offer scholarships for their specific programs. Also, there are federal scholarships available for study abroad programs. See “Financing Study Abroad”.

Can I work while studying abroad?

It’s possible, but it’s best not to count on working while abroad. In most countries you are not allowed because of your student visa status.

What type of housing is offered?

Dorms, shared apartments, and host families are all housing options. Each program’s housing offerings vary.
