NSE - Frequently Asked QuestionsFind answers to the following questions:
Must I be enrolled at the College of Charleston to participate in NSE? Yes. CofC students who want to exchange to another participating U.S. university must be enrolled full time and be in good standing the semester prior to exchange. In addition, students must have an overall GPA of 2.5.
How much does it cost to participate in the NSE program? Students must pay a one time application fee of $125. This application fee is not refundable once your name has been submitted to the NSE consortium.
Students placed on plan B pay tuition at CofC. Students accepted on plan A pay host school resident (in-state) tuition at the host school. Both students accepted on plan b and on plan A pay housing, meals etc. at their host school.
Do I have to enroll full-time at the host school? YES. CofC students are expected to maintain full time status at the host school for the entire exchange.
May I use my financial aid to help pay tuition and other costs? If you are currently receiving financial aid and want to know if your aid can be used for the NSE exchange program, you should speak with a financial aid counselor.
In general, Federal Loans, Grants, State Grants, Life and Palmetto Scholarships can be used for your exchange. CofC Scholarships, CofC Academic Scholarships, Founders Scholarships, and Foundation Scholarships can only be used on plan B where you are charged normal CofC tuition.
Does every US university participate in the exchange? No. Currently there are close to 200 universities that participate in the exchange. For a complete list of participating universities, come to the Center for International education in the Multicultural center, or take a look at the NSE official Website www.nse.org.
How do I apply to participate in the National Student Exchange? CofC students who want to attend another school through the NSE program must complete and return applications to the Center for International Education.
Students cannot negotiate their own exchanges with the host campuses.
How do I register for classes at the host school? Once placed at the host school, the NSE coordinator from that school will send a packet that contains instructions, admission forms and class registration material. Read the information packet carefully to ensure deadlines are not missed!
How do I pay tuition at this program? In most cases CofC have two choices to pay tuition- plan A where host school resident tuition is paid at host school or plan B where CofC tuition is paid at the college of Charleston. On either plan, students are expected to pay housing and meals at the host school.
How do grades transfer back to the College of Charleston? You must have your courses pre-approved to determine whether they will be accepted by CofC as transfer credit. To have your courses pre-approved, you will need to provide a description of each of your proposed courses to the appropriate department chair(s) or representative for them to evaluate the course. Approved courses must appear on the “Coursework Elsewhere Form:” (pink sheet) available in the Center for International Education. To approve credit for your approved courses taken outside the College, you must earn a C or better to receive credit. Courses will transfer as Credit only and therefore will not be factored into your GPA. Only the credit hours will be posted on your student record.
When will I find out that I am accepted by the host school? The CofC NSE coordinator places students at the annual NSE placement conference in mid-March. Applicants are instructed to check with the NSE coordinator to find out about their placement.
Yes. Students can be placed in pairs or groups. Paired or grouped students will be placed together on all choices, so we strongly recommend that applicants confer and agree on all their choices.
How long may I stay on exchange and may I extend my exchange? An exchange is limited to one calendar year. Students may sign up for one semester exchange and if they wish to extend their exchange, they must obtain permission from their host coordinator and the CofC coordinator.
