Faculty & Staff -- Getting Started with Web Publishing

The College of Charleston provides Web space for departments, organizations, and faculty and staff members to establish Web sites.

Faculty/Staff Homepage Publishing

College of Charleston faculty and staff who wish to publish personal homepages on the College's Web servers should fill out an application for Web space and return it to the College Webmaster at webmaster@cofc.edu. Be sure to indicate on the form that the space being requested is a personal homepage, and your account will be activated within 3-5 business days. Upon activation, you will receive additional instructions in the e-mail address provided on the form.

Personal homepages activated after June 2008 are hosted on the College's homepage server, people.cofc.edu. Individual site URLs take the form http://username.people.cofc.edu.

Basic Settings

Basic settings for personal homepages are as follows:

  • Server Name/Remote Host: people.cofc.edu
  • Username: Your COUGARS username
  • Password: Your COUGARS password
  • Protocol: Secure FTP (SFTP)

You will receive a personalized set of instructions when your account is activated.

Quick Tips

  • You must use a Secure FTP program, such as FileZilla or Dreamweaver, to connect to people.cofc.edu. Standard FTP is no longer a supported transport protocol.
  • Your people.cofc.edu username and password are the same username and password you use to log onto your desktop computer and e-mail.
  • Ensure that your homepage's filename is index.html, index.htm, or index.php so that you can be listed in the Faculty/Staff website directory. Contact the Webmaster if you do not wish to be listed.
  • Filenames are case-sensitive on people.cofc.edu. It is strongly recommended to use all-lowercase filenames and abstain from using spaces in filenames, to be friendlier for the Web.
  • Anything uploaded to Web space should be considered public. Do not upload private or sensitive files.
  • Users are given 200 MB of Web space. If this is insufficient, or you run into your quota, contact the Webmaster for further assistance.
  • If you wish to upload media, such as movies or audio files, consider hosting on the College's streaming server instead. Multimedia can often consume the 200 MB limit rather rapidly. Contact the Webmaster or your Instructional Technologist for more details about the streaming server.

Personal Homepage Users on Spinner

Users who maintain their personal homepages on Spinner, the College's primary Web server, are encouraged to migrate their site to people.cofc.edu as soon as they are able. If you run a personal homepage on Spinner, please contact the College Webmaster for assistance in moving your Web site over and redirecting your old address to your new site. Old addresses will be redirected for at least a year.

Departmental or non-student organizational Web pages will not be migrated from Spinner at this time. Departmental sites will be moved into the content management system tentatively starting in late 2008. For more information, please watch webdev.cofc.edu.

How can I tell if I'm on Spinner?

  • All departmental and non-student organizational Web sites are hosted on Spinner.
  • Any personal homepage with an address such as www.cofc.edu/~username is on Spinner.

Departmental and Organizational Web Page Publishing

Departments who wish to establish Web sites can do so by filling out the Web Server Application and indicating a request for departmental Web space. Please allow three to five business days for this application to be processed. Upon the creation of the Web account, additional instructions will be e-mailed to the address provided in the form.

Problems? Questions?
