Learning Management Project

Project Charter

Estimated Project Start Date and End Date:

  • Project Start Date: November, 2007
  • Project End Date: December, 2010

Project Leader:

  • Dr. Susan Beattie, Director of Teaching, Learning and Technology
    (beatties@cofc.edu)

Project Summary:

Our current version of WebCT (4.1) is outdated and will become obsolete in 2009 when support for this product will no longer be available. This project's purpose is to identify a more contemporary Learning Managment System (LMS) that reflects the current teaching and learning needs of faculty and students. The process will include:

  • reviewing research and evaluating the needs of CofC faculty
  • reviewing product demonstrations of leading LMS vendors
  • gathering faculty's input regarding teaching and learning tools
  • identifying the LMS that best matches the needs of the College community
  • creating a solicitation for purchase
  • installing the LMS
  • training the campus community on the effective use of the new LMS

Deliverable(s):

  • A fully-functioning Learning Management System installed and operational.
  • The new LMS connected to our existing student information system.
  • Two-years of new LMS training.

Implications:

  • A new LMS will enable faculty and students to expand the way they use online management systems, beyond the limits of our outdated WebCT 4.1 program. The new product will be more student-centered and collaborative. It will also take advantage of the new Web 2.0 features which will make using the application considerably easier.
