Mobile Labtop Lab (MLL)

The Mobile Laptop Lab (MLL) is made possible through the “Building Learning Communities” grant awarded fromlottery revenues in February 2003. The purpose of the lab is to provide expanded computer access for in-class activities, support training programs, and facilitate group computing tasks under the supervision of qualified faculty and staff at the College of Charleston.

  • Components of MLL
    • 10 Dell Latitude D600 laptop computers
    • 5 Mac PowerbookG4 laptop computers
    • Mice are available upon request.

    • Windows Media Player
    • Adobe Photoshop CS
    • Adobe Pro 6.0
    • MS Internet Explorer 5.2
  • Specialty Software
    • Faculty, staff and students are not authorized to install software. If you need a special program for you class, please make the following available to your Instructional Technologist 2 weeks prior to the usage in class: appropriate number of licenses, installation media (CD's) and any documentation that is required for such installations.
  • Location Availabilty and Constraints
    • While the lab is mobile, there are limits to where and how it can be moved. The lab requires two people to move (at least one of these people needs to be the faculty/staff member who reserved the equipment) and is susceptible to damage if transported over bumpy or uneven surfaces. Given these limitations, the lab may currently be used in the Tate Center, the JC Long Building, and the Education Center.
    • Due to location of wireless access points, there are preferred areas for using the lab if Internet access is required. Rooms which have been pre-certified to have acceptable connectivity are: ECTR 115, 128, 212 and Tate 304. Other rooms will be verified upon request.
    • Due to battery life, the lab can only be reserved for 3 hours of continuous use in a classroom situation. ( Battery is reliable for 2.5 hours + 30 minutes prep time). Note: When being used for workshops or projects where the computers can be plugged in and the lab secured overnight, the lab may be reserved for longer periods of time.
  • Reservation Procedures
    • Reservations should be made at least 7 days prior to desired use. This ensures that the classroom that will be used can be verified to have adequate wireless connectivity.
    • The lab needs to be checked out in its entirety. Individual components may not be reserved.
    • A one-time training session is required before a first-time reservation. Subsequent reservations will not require a repeat of this session.
    • A signed IDT will be required each time the lab is checked out. Note: your department will not be charged if the equipment is returned in good working order.
    • To reserve the lab, call 3-5569 or contact your school's instructional technologist.
