International Piano Series

The International Piano Series at the College of Charleston was founded in 1990 to bring to Lowcountry audiences an array of international pianists in recitals and in occasional orchestral and chamber music programs. Through concerts and master classes the artists offer while in Charleston, students are exposed to different approaches of music making, while the Charleston community is provided and inspiring, entertaining, an affordable musical experience.

The 2008-2009 Season

Andrew von Oeyen - USA • October 7, 2008
Well known to Charleston audiences, Mr. von Oeyen has appeared as soloist with the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra to critical acclaim. Since his debut at age 17 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Esa-Pekka Salonen, Mr. von Oeyen has performed in recital at London’s Wigmore Hall and the Kennedy Center. Orchestral appearances around the world include the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Saint Louis Symphony, the Atlanta, Detroit, Seattle, Utah and Singapore Symphonies, Chicago’s Grant Park Festival Orchestra, and the Rochester Philharmonic. He was awarded the Gilmore Young Artist Award in 1999 and took First Prize in the Lení Fé Bland Foundation National Piano Competition in 2001.
Jean-François Dichamp - France • November 18, 2008
Jean-François Dichamp was unanimously awarded the Premier Prix at the Paris Conservatory in 1986. He was one of the most brilliant students of Nikita Magaloff, and later of Maria Curcio, with whom he studied for four years in London. He won three prizes at the Santander International Piano Competition. He has performed in Spain, Poland, Ireland, England, the USA, Mexico, Turkey, Colombia, Romania and South America. Recently he recorded two CDs for the Lyrinx label, one featuring works by Chopin, the other by Liszt.
Sean Duggan, OSB - USA • January 27, 2009
Sean Duggan is a monk of St. Joseph Abbey in Covington, Louisiana. In September, 1983 he won First Prize in the Johann Sebastian Bach International Competition for Pianists in Washington, D.C., and again in August, 1991. In 2000 he performed the complete cycle of Bach’s keyboard works eight times in various American and European cities. He is presently preparing to record the complete Bach cycle of clavier music and concertos which will comprise 25 CDs. He has performed with many orchestras including the Louisiana Philharmonic, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Leipzig Baroque Soloists, The American Chamber Orchestra and the Pennsylvania Sinfonia.
Ann Schein - USA • February 24, 2009
Since her highly acclaimed Carnegie Hall recital debut as an artist on the Sol Hurok roster, Ann Schein’s amazing career has earned her high praise in major American and European cities and in more than 50 countries around the world. She has performed with great conductors including George Szell, James Levine, Seiji Ozawa, James dePreist, David Zinman, Stanislaw Skrowacewski, and Sir Colin Davis, and with major orchestras including the New York, Los Angeles and London Philharmonics, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony, the Washington National Symphony, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Schein performed at the White House during the Kennedy administration. She has toured with the great soprano, Jessye Norman and they are featured in songs of Alban Berg on Sony Classical. Recent recordings include a Schumann album on Ivory Classics and a Chopin album on MSR Classics.
Yuja Wang - China • March 10, 2009
At age 20, Yuja Wang has already established herself as one of the most significant artists of her generation. She has collaborated with David Zinman, Pinchas Zukerman, Michael Stern, Lorin Maazel, Michael Tilson Thomas, Yuri Temirkanov and Charles Dutoit and major orchestras such as the New York, St. Petersburg and China Philharmonics, the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zurich, the Vancouver, Baltimore, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Chicago and New Jersey Symphony Orchestras. She received the Gilmore Young Artist Award in 2006.
