Course Descriptions

  • PUBA 664 Arts in Education (3 hours)
    Examination of the history, components and theoretical foundations for educational programming in the arts. The course will focus on lkegislation and government funding, music, theater, and dance programming in PK-12 oublic schools, community arts education organizations, professional arts organizations, and specific pilot programs.
  • EDFS 725 Classroom and Behavior Management (3 hours)
    A study of a variety of management systems with focus on specific techniques and their application in the classroom.
  • EDFS 710 Introduction to Exceptional Children (3 hours)
    Introduction to programs, problems and procedures related to working with children and youth who are exceptional: mentally, physically, or behaviorally. Focuses on children and youth who have problems of vision, hearing and speech as well as those with physical and neurological difficulties. Attention is also given to recent research and timely issues dealing with students with exceptionalities and special education programs.
  • EDFS 635 Educational Research (3 hours)
    An indepth study of methods used in different types of research and student involvement in the process of critically evlauatinjg research design, implementation and reporting.
  • EDFS 687 Introduction to Educational Technology (3 hours)
    An introductory course for preservice and inservice teachers using technology in the classroom. Students become familiar with application software such as word processing, databases, and hypermedia, desktop publishing, and telecommunications and learn to evaoluate hardware and software.
  • PUBA 663 Arts and Technology (3 hours)
    Study and exploration of the opportunities new technologies offer to arts mangers and educators, initiatives at the convergence of art and technology and the impact of technology and the arts on culture. Examinaton and conceptualization of the themes of new media, sound art, moving images, the media artist, cyber culture and intellectual property issues
  • EDFS 794MUS Clinical Practice in Dance, Theatre or Music Education (9 hours)
    Students are placed in an education setting commensurate with his or her emphasis in Arts education to observe, teach, and participate fully during the entire school day for a minimum of 60 days. Prerequisite: completion of all coursework and admission to clinical practice.
  • MUSE 701 Choral Conducting: Style and Analysis 1 (3 hours)
    Study of advanced conducting techniques, rehearsal methods and strategies for choral conducting. Prerequisite: 2 semesters undergraduate conducting, or equivalent experience.
  • MUSE 702 Advanced Conducting: Style and Analysis II (3 hours)
    Continued study of advanced conducting techniques. Increased emphasis on choral/orchestral techniques, and opera/music theatre conducting techniques. Prerequisite: Advanced Conducting Style and Analysis 1.
  • MUSE 610 Foundations Preschool and Elementary Music Education Methods (3 hours)
    Organization and management of preschool and elementary music programs, teaching methodologies with emphasis on methods such as Orff and Kodaly. Course content will include elementary classroom observations. Prerequisite: Undergraduate conducting.
  • MUSE 611 Middle and Secondary Music Education Methods (3 hours)
    Organization and management of choirs, repertoire, programming considerations, and teaching methodology appropriate to Middle School/Junior High/High School Choirs. Prerequisite: Undergraduate conducting
  • MUSE 602 Vocal Pedagogy (2 hours)
    Study of vocal function and the techniques/methods methods for training the singing voice. Emphasis on the anatomy and function of the singing voice. Includes training and practice as a voice teacher-listening/analyzing/diagnosing singing voice technique, and selecting/coaching singing repertoire for various levels of singing. Prerequisite: Applied Voice
  • MUSE 703 Music Literature Seminar (2 hours)
    Focus on survey of appropriate music literature for use across grade levels. Analysis and collection of appropriate repertoire across age and grade levels is emphasized. Pre-requisite: Elementary and Secondary Methods.
  • MUSE 704 Trends and Issues in Music Education
    A review of current critical issues and trends in music education as these relate to local, state, and national education agencies and the education of children and youth in PK-12 public schools.
  • MUSE 601 Graduate Applied Music
    Individual lessons in voice for graduate students. Private Lessons are one hour per week. Students will progress and develop in advanced singing technique, tone quality, musicianship and performance skills.
