International Piano Series

The International Piano Series at the College of Charleston was founded in 1990 to bring to Lowcountry audiences an array of international pianists in recitals and in occasional orchestral and chamber music programs. Through concerts and master classes the artists offer while in Charleston, students are exposed to different approaches of music making, while the Charleston community is provided and inspiring, entertaining, an affordable musical experience.

Due to renovations at the Sottile Theatre all concerts this season will be held in 2007.

The 2007 Season

Marina Lomazov - Ukraine • January 23, 2007
Lomazov, who was a hit with Charleston audiences during Spoleto Festival USA 2005, kicks off the season with her first solo recital in Charleston. Praised by critics, she has been awarded top prizes in major piano competitions, performs regularly around the world and her live performances are broadcast often on NPR's Performance Today, New York's WQXR's Young Artist Showcase and Boston's GBH's Classics in the Morning. Lomazov is on the faculty at the University of South Carolina.
Anne-Marie McDermott - USA • February 6, 2007
Well known to Charleston audiences for her performances in the Spoleto Festival USA Chamber Music Series, Anne-Marie McDermott has performed as soloist with major orchestras as the New York and Hong Kong Philharmonics. Recital engagements include New York's Town Hall, Alice Tully Hall, 92nd Street Y, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. She has participated in festivals such as Mostly Mozart, Ravinia, Aspen, Bravo Vail Valley, and Santa Fe. McDermott has recorded the complete cycle of Prokofiev sonatas and Chamber works for Arabesque Recordings and her a ll-Bach recording on the GMN label was chosen as Gramophone Magazine's Editor's Choice.
Chu-Fang Huang - China • February 27, 2007
First Prize winner of the 2006 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, the 2005 Cleveland International Piano Competition, the 2003 Hilton Head International Piano Competition and a finalist in the Twelfth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2005, Huang has also won top prizes at the Beijing and Sydney International Competitions. A recent graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, she is currently studying with Robert McDonald at the Juilliard School.
Andrew Armstrong - USA • March 27, 2007
Winner of the prestigious Gilmore Young Artist Award in 1996, Armstrong has performed recitals and as soloist with orchestras in Asia, Europe, Latin America and the United States, including appearances at Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Grand Hall of Moscow Conservatory and Warsaw's National Philharmonic. As a member of the Caramoor Virtuosi he has appeared several times in Charleston.
William Villaverde - Cuba • April 17, 2007
College of Charleston alumnus, William Villaverde studied with Enrique Graf on a full s cholarship and is currently in the Artist Certificate program at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. William came to the United States after winning many competitions in his native Havana. In this country he won the Meadows Concerto Competition in Texas, the Southeastern Piano Competition in North Carolina and the Arthur Fraser Competition of the South Carolina Philharmonic. He was also a national finalist of the Music Teachers Association Competition.
