Required Courses for the Minor

BIOL351/PSYC351: Neuroscience I
The first course of a two semester series that serves as a rigorous introduction to the field of neuroscience. The first semester will focus on brain anatomy, cellular and molecular function of neurons, and development of nervous systems. The course is team taught by faculty from the Biology and Psychology departments.
Prerequisites: PSYC103, BIOL 111, 112, 211

BIOL352/PSYC352: Neuroscience II
The second course of a two semester series that serves as a rigorous introduction to the field of Neuroscience. The second semester will focus on sensory and motor systems, neural regulatory systems, functional neuroanatomy, and behavioral/cognitive neuroscience.
Prerequisites: BIOL/PSYC351 (Neuroscience I)

BIOL447/PSYC447: Seminar in Neuroscience
A seminar course exposing students to cutting-edge neuroscience research. Research seminars by neuroscientists will be combined with the reading and discussion of primary literature. Students will learn to effectively write about and present their own ongoing research projects. This course will serve as a capstone experience for students minoring in neuroscience.
Prerequisites: BIOL/PSYC351 (Neuroscience I) & BIOL/PSYC352 (Neuroscience II), Junior or senior standing and permission of the instructor.

BIOL448/PSYC448: Research in Neuroscience
A year-long senior research project conducted under the supervision of a faculty member in the Neuroscience Program at CofC or MUSC. Along with the faculty mentor, the student must submit a written project proposal for approval prior to course registration. This course is designed for students who are working towards a neuroscience minor.
Prerequisites: Neuroscience I and II. Co-requisite: Independent Research in Neuroscience or permission of the instructor. Students engaged in Independent Research or a Bachelor’s Essay will be given priority for enrollment.

In addition to these courses, students must take two additional elective courses (click here to see the list).

For students minoring in Neuroscience we have created a suggested curriculum for students majoring in Biology or Psychology. Click on the links to access a pdf of these documents. Students from other departments interested in minoring in Neuroscience should contact Neuroscience faculty for additional advising on declaring and completing the minor.
