Early Childhood Development Center Dedicates Renovated Building

September 30, 2002

The College of Charleston School of Education will host a celebration and dedication of the newly renovated N.E. Miles Early Childhood Development Center on Friday, November 1. Celebration activities will include an open house from 9-11 a.m., a dedication ceremony at 11 a.m., and a drop-in from 4-6 p.m., during which refreshments will be served. Campus and community members are invited to attend.

Located at 91 Wentworth Street, the early childhood development center recently underwent a massive one-year renovation project. The laboratory learning center and preschool now features a brighter, more spacious environment for the 65 young children it serves. “The effective education of young children is critical to their continued success throughout life. Our completely renovated early childhood center provides a state of the art facility for the children, our students, and faculty to develop and learn,” said Dr. Frances Welch, dean of the School of Education.

Dr. N.E. Miles, a pediatric ophthalmologist from Birmingham, Ala., gave the College a $1 million bequest to help fund the project. The alumnus wanted to be involved in an endeavor that would help children, including those with special needs. He found this project in the College’s constructivist laboratory school, which has been renamed the N.E. Miles Early Childhood Development Center in his honor.

The learning laboratory has a long history of serving children in the Charleston area. Mrs. Kitty McIntosh, an early childhood educator, and then-President Ted Stern, founded it in 1974. The first location of the center was in a small building on St. Philip Street. The program soon outgrew its cramped quarters and moved into the then-Bishop England Chapel on Calhoun Street, which serves as the current Treasurer’s Office. Three years later, the program relocated to its current home at 91 Wentworth after a brief stint in the small building behind Memminger Elementary School.

Currently, the preschool serves 65 children, ages 2 to 5, including those with special needs. It has four master teachers, five graduate student assistants, and numerous undergraduate workers. For more information on the Miles Early Childhood Development Center, call 953-5606.
