Good Morning America, ABC-TV’s early morning show, will broadcast live on Wednesday, November 13, from the Dock Street Theatre as part of its “50 States, One Nation, One Year” campaign. For College of Charleston senior Khaliah El-Amin and alumna Jaime Newsom it will be a reunion of sorts.

While an undergraduate at the College of Charleston, Newsom, now an admissions counselor and coordinator of volunteer services at the College, was an intern with Good Morning America (GMA) during the summer 1999. She worked with nearly all aspects of production, from writing scripts to helping with props.

Khaliah El-Amin is a communication major at the College who spent summer 2002 interning with GMA. Her job involved using the Media Asset Retrieval System (MARS) to look up old footage for breaking news stories. While working on the concert series in Times Square for GMA, Khaliah met many celebrities, including Luther Vandross and Usher. The overall experience made her realize that she wanted to go into production after graduation. She is currently doing an internship with WCIV-TV News Channel 4.

Internships are extremely important to any college student. Whether they are paid or not, they give participants practical work experiences that can help them decide what they might or might not want to do following graduation. Likewise, employers have the opportunity to try out potential new employees.

“Internships give our students the opportunity to apply for positions or to companies they might not otherwise have had access to,” according to Lydia Keadle, internship coordinator with the College of Charleston’s Office of Career Services. “They also give students the chance to learn about professional culture – something that makes them more competitive when they enter the job market.” During any given semester there are more than 750 College of Charleston students that participate in career service’s internship program; many others obtain internships directly with companies.

Some internship opportunities available to College of Charleston students include Automated Trading Desk, Blackbaud, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, New York Life Insurance, Pepsi, Smithsonian Institution, South Carolina Aquarium, Washington Center, and Woods Hold Oceanographic Institution.
