C of C Part of Effort to Boost State's Biomedical Research

The College of Charleston is part of a statewide initiative to increase biomedical research in South Carolina. The $5.9 million project is being federally funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Of this amount the College of Charleston has been awarded $620,000. - (12/17/2001)

On Oct. 31, an audience at the College of Charleston’s Physicians Auditorium was treated to an inspiring presentation about the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley by S.C. Sen. Sophomore Receives Jacob Murray Book Scholarship

Allison Clyburn, a sophomore at the College of Charleston, has been awarded The Jacob Murray Memorial Book Fund for 2001. The award is given annually to a deserving student who works in the the college’s libraries, archives, or museums. The late Jacob Murray was a former assistant principal and assistant football coach at James Island High School. DuBose Bracey Griffin, a graduate student in the University of Charleston’s Master of Science Environmental Studies (MES) program, has been selected to receive a national Career Advancement Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 through the Business and Professional Women’s Foundation. The Business and Professional Women’s Foundation is a nonpartisan, leading advocate for working women since 1919. High Schools Join Unique C of C Sea Science Program

For six years College of Charleston Geology Professor Leslie Sautter has been taking undergraduate and graduate marine biology and geology students, as well as local science teachers, out to sea for research cruises. Science education grants secured from the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium and support from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have enabled Sautter to conduct these day long excursions aboard NOAA vessels several times a year. - (10/18/2001)

Graduate Student Receives New Habitat for Humanity Internship

Alicia Carvajal, a first year student in the University of Charleston’s Master of Environmental Studies program, has been chosen for a new family services intern position with Charleston Habitat for Humanity. A grant of $5,400 by the Charleston investment firm Salomon Smith Barney Inc. has enabled the new position to be established. The Salomon Smith Barney Habitat for Humanity Grant stipulates that a student in Charleston’s MES program be selected annually for this internship. - (9/18/2001)
