Winter of Our Discontent

So it is, unfortunately, with the Shakespeare ProjectÕs version of The WinterÕs Tale, in performance now at the College of CharlestonÕs Chapel Theatre through the end of the month. Poor staging, often mediocre (and sometimes dreadful) acting, and some questionable production choices combine to result in the kind of play that could easily convince an audience member whoÕs completely new to classical theatre to swear off Shakespeare for the rest of her life. Nobody doubts the sincerity of the intent here. ItÕs the execution that falters.

Puppets, masks enhance 'Winter's Tale'

This venerable play may sound rather unorthodox because puppets and masks interact with human actors. However, when "The Winter's Tale" opens Wednesday, the College of Charleston's Shakespeare Project and theater department will take a chance, employing some of the stage tactics of the Broadway hit "The Lion King."

Picture This

It would seem, judging from ZenderÕs reaction, that the College of Charleston, which owns the museum, is having some internal growing pains. The college is struggling to adapt a college campus designed for half as many students who actually attend classes there. And part of how the school hopes to adapt is by making better use of its facilities through a master plan which President Lee Higdon unveiled in 2003.
