"COPS": Community-Oriented Public Safety
  1. The greatest deterrents to crime in a community are education and communication.  Without awareness of and sensitivity to the critical issues facing our community population and the willingness to discuss and report violations, intervention and resolution are difficult to accomplish.
  2. Promoting and maintaining a safe campus environment takes more than guns and badges.  No amount of law enforcement training can match the value of the eyes and ears of concerned community members who report suspicious behavior, safety hazards and violations of good citizenship that allow a law enforcement agency to take a proactive instead of reactive approach to the safety and well-being of the community they serve.
  3. Any crime against an individual or property affects the entire community. The library books that are stolen or damaged, doors left propped open or unlocked, vandalism, deaf, dumb and blind indifference -- all have impact in dollars and cents or, worse, in inviting another's personal tragedy.
  4. REMEMBER:  The best personal offensive strategies against crime cost absolutely nothing:
    • Common Sense - (example:  NEVER walk alone at 2:00 a.m. ANYWHERE)
    • Mom's warnings -  (DON'T talk to strangers, or get in their cars...)
  5. What is Public Safety? Without you it's just a building, a department, and a title.  YOU make the difference.  We need you to be a part of the team in building a strong, safe and proud College of Charleston community.
