Protecting Your Investment In Books

Replacing books that have been lost or stolen affects more than your bank account. The personal cost -- the inconvenience, frustration, time and energy involved -- can't be measured in monetary terms.  Please take preventative measures to protect your investment. A few simple steps to avert lost or stolen books can save you a lot more than money.

  1. Place an identifying number inside the front cover of your books. The number should be written in a size that will be easily recognizable yet allow the book to be resold if you choose to do so.
  2. Desks, cabinets, lockers, rooms and office spaces where books are stored should be locked to prevent theft.
  3. Keep a list of the books you own by title and author(s) in a separate location in the event your books are stolen or lost.
  4. Inventory your books frequently and report all discrepancies to Campus Police immediately. Apprehension of the suspect and recovery of the property is more difficult the longer the delay.
  5. NEVER leave your books/book bags unattended on tables, desks, floors, in classrooms - not even for a second!  It only takes a second to become a victim of theft.
  6. Bags used to carry books should be clearly marked for easy identification. They should be marked on the inside as well as the outside.
  7. If you loan a book to another individual keep a record of it. List the individual's name, the time and date you loaned the book(s) and the title and author.
  8. Report stolen or lost books immediately to Campus Police (953-5611) and College Bookstore (953-5518).  Identity the books/book bag (number, title(s), author(s), size, color and any identifying marks) that will help in the recovery of your property.
  9. Report all suspicious activity to Campus Police.

Protect your investment. A bit of prevention may save you a lot of headache
