Weapons

1. The Law Abiding Citizens Self-Defense Act of 1996 (Concealed Weapons Law) has generated confusion as to what is permissible under the law regarding the carrying of firearms with a permit. Please note that Section 16-23-420
(A) states, "it is unlawful for a person to carry onto any premises or property owned, operated, or controlled by a private or public school, college, university, technical college, other post-secondary institution, or any publicly-owned building a firearm of any kind, without the express permission of the authorities in charge of the premises or property."

2. A person who violates the provisions of Section 16-23-420
(A) is guilty of a felony and, upon conviction, must be fined not more than five thousand dollars or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.

3. Section 23-31-217 outlines the right of a public/private employer as well as a private property owner to prohibit the carrying of a concealable weapon upon the premises.

4. Possessing/carrying a weapon onto any College of Charleston property is a violation of both state law and campus policy.

5. Please notify our Campus Police (953-5611) immediately if you witness or suspect someone in possession of a weapon of any kind. Your help is invaluable in insuring the safety and well-being of all members of our community. Keeping our campus free from the tragedy of violence is a community effort.
