Herb Parker

Herb Parker completed an environmental sculpture Greer Head in August of this year at an elementary school in Greer, South Carolina. The work, commissioned by the South Carolina Arts Commission, is approximately 20' high 60' wide and 100' deep. The piece includes seating elements for a teacher and a class and will be a space for reading, story telling, and other group activity. It is heavily planted and will hopefully mature into an exciting environment.

Herb presented Sculpture on the Grounds at the Montalvo Gallery, Saratoga, California on October 16 and 17. The public was invited to watch Herb create his environmental sculpture. Photos and descriptions of the work can be seen at the Monatalvo website (http://www.villamontalvo.org).

High Tide
The Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art exhibited the works of Joe Walters (Adjunct professor of sculpture) in "High Tide: Paintings & Sculptures by Joe Walter"s in its regional exhibition gallery from August 1 to September 28. The museum’s website (http://www.jmoma.org) describes the exhibit as follows: “Walters’ meticulously sculpted flora and fauna made of wire, glue, sand, Styrofoam, and pigment are arranged in a complex wall installation. Also on exhibit is a series of rust-colored works on paper inspired by the artist’s observations of vegetation in salt marshes around the Charleston area. Walters’ captures the reflection of twisted branches at high tide through layered surfaces that are both haunting and beautiful.”

Current Faculty Exhibits

Lynne Riding is showing new works from the Pritchards Island Series at the ES Lawrence Gallery (229 Meeting Street). On the gallery’s webpage (http://www.eslawrence.com) Lynne’s Artist Statement states:

“Over the past few years my work has shifted between the figure and the landscape, sometimes incorporating both. Most recently I have focused on the landscape while alluding to a figural presence. My use of landscape imagery stems from both a sensory/emotional investigation and an analytical/observed one.

My work investigates the relation between my body and the landscape or space I inhabit. When seeing my work, one may ask whether the physical body is present in or absent from these landscapes. Are the works reminiscent or suggestive?”

Michael Tyzack, Cliff Peacock, Barbara Duval and Paul Hitopoulos are among the artists whose work appears in “View from the Water’s Edge,” exhibition and art auction—the first annual benefit for Piccolo Spoleto. The show opened at the City Gallery at Waterfront Park on October 24, an auction was held on November 13.
