CLASSIC TRAGEDY PROVES TO BE A TIMELESS DRAMA WHEN THE COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON THATRE DEPARTMENT PRESENTS “THE TROJAN WOMEN”

Come witness the aftermath of the Trojan War when the Theatre Department presents Euripides’ classic tragedy “The Trojan Women” opening Thursday, April 11 at 8 p.m. Under the direction of Evan Parry, the production will continue through Tuesdsay, April 16 in the Emmett Robinson Theatre.

Euripedes is considered to be the most socially critical of all the Ancient Greek tragedians. In his brutually honest play “The Trojan Women”, the Trojan War has ended, and the victorious Greeks are preparing to lead the women of Troy into slavery. The circumstancesthese women find themselves in lead them to question their faith in the traditional pantheon of gods. Through these events, Euripides reveals, the differing responses of men and women to war and the victimization of its survivors. He powerfully and vividly suggests that man caught in the midst of contradictions of war becomes the perpetrator of ruthless violence on defenseless women and children. Artistically powerful and memorable, the “Trojan Women” delivers an important message of lasting significance. Parry’s adaptation features exciting stage combat and dynamic dance sequences.

The cast includes faculty member Joy Vanderhort-Cobb (Hecabe), Nick DiFonzo (Odysseus), Mandy Wojtkowski (Polyxena), David Jenkins (Talthybius), Christine Shipp (Cassandra, daughter of Hecabe), Corine LaBonte (Andramache) and Olivia Isgett (Helen, daughter of Zeus, “the face that launched a thousand ships”).
