THEATRE PRODUCTION
Description: “The Tempest" by William Shakespeare and directed by Evan Parry
“The Tempest” takes place on a magical desert island, peopled by spirits and other strange creatures, as well as by Prospero, the former Duke of Milan, marooned there years before with his daughter Miranda. Through his magic, and that of his spirit-servant Ariel, Prospero is able to create a sea-storm that shipwrecks his enemies, as well as Ferdinand, the Prince of Naples, who quickly falls under the spell of both Prospero and Miranda. In this remote world ruled by unexplainable forces, everyone is changed forever, discovering the power of love and grace.
Director Evan Parry has set this production in 1611, at the time of the play’s first production. But, as a means of underlining the play’s themes of reconciliation and release from servitude, the production is staged by a group of women who break into the Globe Theatre in order to tell Shakespeare’s story illegally, the only way in which women of the time might do so. However, this group of renegade actresses, prepared to tell their story by lantern-light, soon realizes that the theatre, like Prospero’s island, has its own kind of wondrous magical power.
