Chris Burgess, having served as adjunct professor and a Visiting Assistant Professor has joined the Program as a permanent Assistant Professor, replacing Lori Kornegay. Burgess is currently a PhD candidate at Ohio State. He teaches Introduction to Arts Management and Arts Financial Management as well as Arts Management courses in the Graduate School. |

The
Charleston Jazz Initiative (CJI) is a multi-year
research project that documents the African American jazz
tradition in Charleston, the South Carolina Lowcountry, and
its diasporic movement throughout the United States and Europe
between the late 19th century through today. CJI was established
in March 2003 by native Charlestonian Jack McCray (left),
jazz journalist and long-time researcher of Charleston’s jazz tradition, and Dr. Karen Chandler (right), Associate
Professor of Arts Management, School of the Arts at the College
of Charleston and former director of the Avery Research Center
for African American History and Culture. Founded at the Avery Research Center, CJI
operates out of the Arts Management Program, School of the
Arts and in partnership with Avery. On
June 2-4,2005, CJI presented “Return to the Source”,
a weekend of public presentations and conversations, public
unveiling of original art, photojazz exhibition, live jazz,
and the inaugural gathering of the CJI Circle during Spoleto
Festival USA. “Return to the Source” celebrated
the rich jazz tradition of African American musicians from
the famed Jenkins Orphanage Bands, the former Avery Normal
Institute, and the Charleston and South Carolina region.For

As Director of Events for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Amanda plans and executes all of their fundraising events around the country with various Members of Congress, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She is coordinating all of the DCCC events and activities for the 2008 Democratic Convention in Denver, CO. Prior to taking on her role at the DCCC in February of 2007, she worked at the Washington Performing Arts Society and Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts in Program and Production positions.
"Studying Arts Management has benefited me in all 3 positions I’ve held after graduation. Experience with budgets, organizational planning, fundraising, and of course interning with so many different types of organizations in Charleston allowed me to get a full range of experience with Arts Management!"

Paul Myers-Davis (class of 2005) will enter the Media and Film Production graduate program at Temple University in Pennsylvania this fall.
Lindsay Gertz, class of 2001, is a Design Arts Assistant with the South Carolina Arts Commission.

Kelly Linton (class of 2001) is the new Communications Manager for the Baltimore Museum of Art in the Marketing and Communications Department. She will focus on extensive media relations, will be the editor of their 24-page quarterly magazine and a new website launching in March 2007. She will also be working with the curatorial staff to write and position the copy for each of the museum's 15-20 annual exhibits. |

Erin Eisele (class of 2001) is the Outreach Coordinator for Class Acts in Silver Spring, MD.

Michael Ann Mulliken (class of 2004) is Manager of Dance Programming and The Suzanne Farrell Ballet at
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Rebecca Picard, currently a Junior, was recently awarded a
Charleston Restaurant Association Scholarship. Rebecca is minoring
in Hospitality and Tourism Management.
Katie Kinard (class of 2004) was recently hired as Assistant Box Office Manager
at Spoleto Festival USA.
Cristina Bailey (class of 2003)
is the Visitor Services Coordinator at the Gibbes Museum of Art
in Charleston.
Adele Fenner
(class of 2005) will start a ballet program for grades K-5 at Ashley
Hall in Charleston this fall. Fenner formerly taught and performed
with the Robert Ivey Ballet.
