| Printmakers of the Charleston Renaissance: an appraisal case study. In the early decades of the twentieth century, a revival of the visual arts in Charleston took place. Now in the early years of the twenty-first century, we find renewd interest in the paintings and prints of this era, both from a scholarly and marketing standpoint. How does this relate to Art Appraisal? In many cases, appraisers can not only estimate dollar value but can also add to the artwork's cultural documentation. In this session we will use appraisal techniques to unfold the story of Charleston Renaissance printmakers. Hand-outs on printmaking terminology, a bibiliography, and a folder on fine art appraisal will be supplied. |

Jan M. Goin is an appraiser who specializes in Modern printmakers and Southern regionalist and post World War II era painters. Ms. Goin received her undergraduate degree from the College of Charleston, where she studied with William Halsey. Her father, John Muller, opened The Charles Town Gallery at 24 State Street (now the site of Nina Liu and Friends) in 1963, and Ms. Goin purchased the gallery and moved it to King Street in 1974. Jan Goin Gallery represented regional Southern contemporary artists. After Hurricane Hugo devastated Charleston and the Lowcountry in 1989, Ms. Goin's gallery functioned as a warehouse for clients and others who needed to store, repair, and evaluate their damaged artworks. Noting the local need for a professional art appraiser, Ms. Goin entered the American Society of Appraisers' education program to learn appraisal methodology and reporting. In 1992 she opened her appraisal practice and, after meeting the requirements of experience, testing and advanced appraisal education, Ms. Goin was awarded the designation of Accredited Senior Appraiser in Fine Arts with the American Society of Appraisers. Ms. Goin is the Past President of the South Carolina
Chapter of the American Society of Appraisers. She also has served as
Treasurer and Vice-President for that organization. She is Past President
of the Friends of the Charleston County Library, and she was Gallery Coordinator
for that group from 1997 to 2000. Ms. Goin has served on the Archives
Committee for First Scots Presbyterian Church, and she is an exhibiting
member of the Charleston Artists' Guild. |
