Joanne Barry Biography: Joanne Barry is a conservator in Charleston who serves a private clientele and corporations such as the Coca-Cola Company and Historic Charleston Foundation. Prior to coming to Charleston, she has been Assistant Paintings Conservator at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and a Painting Conservation Intern at the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She has a Bachelor of Fine Art Degree in painting and drawing with a minor in Art History and a concentration in chemistry from the University of Delaware. Ms. Barry obtained her Master of Science in Art Conservation from the University of Delaware/Winterthur Museum. She has been a decorative painter in New York, where she created custom faux finishes for interiors, and she also worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as the Administrative Assistant for the Art History Lecture Department. Synopsis: The field of art conservation is very small
and specialized with its own unusual terms and use of scientific technology.
This lecture will provide the lay person with a better understanding of
how to interpret conservation proposals and make sound decisions regarding
treatments. The presentation will provide the audience with a translation
of technological terms used in the field to help in communicating with
conservators. Many examples of the various aspects of conservation treatments
will be shown in order to demonstrate the importance of client awareness.
The lecture will provide the audience members with help in selecting a
qualified conservator to provide cautious and ethical preservation services
