An Introduction to Decorative Arts in Charleston
Location: 198 Belted Kingfisher Road, Kiawah

Biography: George C. Williams is a partner in Estate Antiques, Inc. in Charleston. He holds a bachelor's degree in Art History from Davidson College, and he has pursued graduate study through the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts' Summer Institute. Mr. Williams is a lecturer and decorative arts consultant, and this will be his second lecture for the Charleston Antiques Symposium. His publications include the catalogue for the Rivers collection of Charleston furniture and associated decorative arts, and he currently is conducting research for a book which will address furniture produced in South Carolina prior to 1850.

Synopsis: This session will provide an overview of the decorative arts in Charleston, with a focus on furniture produced between 1670 and 1820. Special emphasis will be placed on one object from each period that reflects the social and political environment in which it was produced.
