Treatment of Historic Furniture: Philosophy and Technique
Location: Room 309, Simons Center for the Arts

Biography: Gregory J. Landrey is Director of Conservation and Senior Conservator at the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum. He holds a bachelors degree in history from Gettysburg College, and he has engaged in additional study at the University of Delaware and the State Academy for Restoration in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Mr. Landrey teaches at the University of Delaware. His publications include The Winterthur Guide to Caring for Your Collection and articles such as "Furniture with a Secret" in American Woodworker and "The Conservator as Curator" in American Furniture. Mr. Landrey has presented numerous lectures, including "Standards of Practice and Ethics in Furniture Conservation" for the Christopher Gilbert Memorial Lecture and "Treatment of Painted Historic Furniture, Philosophy and Technique" for the Regional Furniture Society, both in London. Other lecture titles have been "Traditional Cabinetmaking," "Science and Furniture Conservation," and "Conservation for the Collector." Mr. Landrey is an associate member of the American Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, and he has been Co-Chair and Chair of the Wooden Artifacts Group.

Synopsis: This lecture will use case studies from assessments and treatments of historic furniture carried out at the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum conservation facility in Winterthur, Delaware. The projects presented will be used to illustrate various techniques and philosophies of treatment. This lecture will focus on the issues that are faced in assessing and treating historic furniture for collectors and museums alike. A brief overview of the Winterthur Country estate and its collections will be included.
