Foreign Languages Tutoring Lab:
Tutor Certification
Each Tutor must receive 10 hours of training and must tutor for 25 hours in the Foreign Languages Lab in order to qualify for Level I certification.
Tutor training activities may be selected from the following list:
All activities in bold are mandatory for certification.
Each Tutor is required to keep a record of his/her training activities in the form entitled Tutor Training Documentation.
When the 10 hours requirement has been satisfied, please give the form to the Foreign Languages Tutoring Lab Director, Brigitte Codron. Tutors are bound by the College of Charleston Honor Code when reporting tutor training activities.

- Tutor training workshop: This is an introductory workshop offered the day before classes begin each fall. It is offered to all Tutors and is mandatory for both new and returning tutors.
- Study Skills Seminars: These are offered each semester by the Study Skills Lab staff. Attending at least one seminar is required for certification. Dates and times offered are on our Web page and in your CSL manual.
- Tutor's Guide Videotape Series: Each tape is 15 minutes long and can be viewed in the Foreign Languages Tutoring Lab.
- Languages Instructional Videos: Tutors may view content specific videos available in the Foreign Languages Tutoring Lab. Topics are listed on tutoring handout.
- Tutor Staff Meetings: Dates, times and topics will be announced via email or flyers in the lab.
- Other: Other possibilities for tutor training will be posted during the year on the bulletin board in the Foreign Languages Tutoring Lab.
- Lesson 1: Introduction to Tutoring.
- Lesson 2: The First Session.
- Lesson 3: The Tutorial Plan.
- Lesson 4: Diagnosis and the Socratic Method.
- Lesson 5: Diagnosis through observation.
- Lesson 6: Tutoring Learning Skills.
- Lesson 7: Managing Group Tutorials.
- Lesson 8: The Tutor as Counselor.
- Lesson 9: Bridging Cultural Gaps.
