The Annual Young Contemporaries exhibit has been a fixture in the School of the Arts for over 20 years. The concept was based on a prestigious national show held in the United Kingdom. It was brought to the College by former Department Chair and Professor Emeritus Michael Tyzack, who sought to arrange for a regular show of student work, selected by an outside juror.
The Department of Studio Art recommends the juror. He or she is invited by the Halsey Gallery to come to Charleston, give a public lecture, and select work for the show. This year, Los Angeles resident, Mark Trujillo, an urban landscape painter, 2001 winner of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award and professor of Drawing and Painting at Santa Monica College, was invited to be the juror.
The contest is open to all students enrolled at the College of Charleston during the current year. All works must be original and have been executed within the last year. There are no limitations on media or size. Each student may submit up to three works per area, per artist (i.e. 3 paintings, 3 sculptures, etc.) A list of accepted works are posted for students at the gallery.
Work released by the juror of the Young Contemporaries show is reviewed by the Studio Art faculty and suitable pieces are selected for a show in the Simons Center Student Gallery under the moniker “Salon des Refuses” |
