Current Efforts
Capital Projects have included some of the following:
- Replacement of incandescent lightbulbs with Compact Fluorescents (on going)
- Use of motion sensor lighting (on going)
- Replacing all T-12 lamps with T-8 lamps (longer life bulb)
- LED bulbs in exit signs (on going)
- Replace magnetic ballasts with energy efficient electronic ballasts
- Replace mercury vapor ballasts with energy efficient metal halide ballasts.
- Smaller tank toilets with auto-flush
- Sensor activated faucets
- Currently maintains the recycling of cardboard paper, plastic, and cans throughout campus at a rate of 7% of total waste.
- The electrical shop crushes and recycles fluorescent lamps./li>
- Gradual incorporation of native plants
- Irrigation systems that are set on timers based on season and growing period
- Incorporation of water sensors (on going)
- Use of insecticidal soap and horticultural oil
- Use of Chelated iron and Epsom salts for fertilizer for specific plants
- Hibernation setting used on computers
- Discussion in class regarding sustainability- including a global warming lab
- City bus system free for CofC community
- Reduced parking rates for car poolers
- Use of Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs/LED’s 99%
- All maintenance carts are electric
- low-flow toilets and low-flow showerheads.
- All appliances purchased after 2003 are Energy-Star compliant.
- Sustainable finish materials are being used throughout all residential facilities including natural linoleum, vinyl tile with recycled content, carpet with recycled nylon and fabrics with recycled nylon & plastics.
